The first issue that I sat in as the acting Art Director, taking on the role of managing the layout of the entire paper. Not too difficult, since there were no major creative elements for this particular issue.
These articles, specifically the Word Tips article, was reworked as a colour-coded information graphics piece, the aim of which was to provide a quick reference piece that was easy to navigate, so that it would be more useful to its intended audience. This layout won praise from the author, and successfully achieved its goal. The second article was a fun piece using REAL names of real firms as its main image.
The second issue that I sat in as Art Director. This issue was much more challenging, as I balanced a major information design article along with creative challenges from both the Main and Focus sections of the paper. Shown is the front cover, and the major article requiring information graphics.
Using ticker tape strips as "seasonal ribbons" with article headers on each one, this became the cover for the 2010 Year in Review.
Another information graphics piece, specifically dealing with the content of the decisions of judges, as well as papers authored by judges in the supreme court of Canada in 2010.
Illustration and information graphics. Information graphics designed with a centre axis, with the purpose of comparing overall market prices, and downtown core prices for real estate, using satellite images and commonly recognized urban cityscapes to identify each area respectively.
The largest single chart published by this paper in over a year. The biggest challenge with this chart was fitting the data into the space allocated for the article, considering that the data was raw, and had not been edited for consistency by the author. Some data categories had to be edited by the paper to make it work.
