FlipLight Ambient Emergency Lamp - An emergency light that's always ready and easy to find when you need it. It charges upright as shown, absorbing light. Then, in a power failure, it emits a blue glow from the electro-luminescent sufrace below. Flip it upside down to activate the powerful torchie style EL lamp.

Introduction - This project started as an early level coursework assignment to redesign a flashlight. I wanted to narrow the focus, and define the problem more specifically, so I focused on lights for the rolling blackouts the American Southwest had been experiencing late that summer. The solution would need to be: readily available, always charged, and a sustainable light source
Brainstorming - Initial sketching explored different ways of holding, using, and interacting with flashlights. Later sketches focused on keep the light accessible, and working an attractive form. Early in autumn, the falling leaves inspired the final shape, and idea of a flip over activation.
Fabrication Blow-Up
In Use - In the dark, Fliplite emits a dull glow from the underside to make it easy to locate. When flipped upside-down, the Fliplite's photo-sensors activate the electroluminescent underside, producing a warm ambient glow.
Charging - The FlipLite charging, On a coffee table, desktop, or anywhere visible, the Fliplite can charge its PV cells during daylight hours.
