Bounce Chair - Bounce is designed with elements of humor, craftsmanship, and simplicity. These three design elements guided the way to a chair that is intended to be humorous to the user, but even more so to an onlooker. Bounce is intended to subject its users to the natural response that we have when experiencing a feeling of falling, and then catch him just as he begins to flail. An average 175 pound man exerts over 600 pounds of force on a seat pan when he sits, and Bounce is designed with exactly this in mind. The final design is constructed of bent plywood and birch veneer, and a weight rated steel coil spring. The bent plywood is structural as a seat pan and back, but could not support the user on its own. The spring is rated to compress under less than the weight of an average person, thus resulting in the entire seat pan moving down with the weight of the user, on average, four inches. After the initial force of a person sitting down the spring comes back to rest just slightly compressed, with a seat pan height of about 16.5 inches. Bounce also can be an alternative to a typical rocking chair.
