Tying these four ideas together reminds me that thinking and working in a holistic manner is effective and efficient for problem-solving. Each project process is unique, but being able to adapt to each situation is critical and the skills I have allow me to do this. By understanding the application of models, methods, and techniques I have learned how to successfully move forward.
Chuck Palahniuk said, “We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever. It’s to create something that will.”
I came across this quote when I was very young. I have always known that I want to do more than just exist in this world. I know that whatever I do I want to make something that will make a difference to people. Something that will forever change the way people do things. Something that will make an impact.
The idea is to inspire.
I like to maintain at least one central goal: make something that will live forever. All of the work should mean something to someone- make it with them, not for them. Learning how to make things WITH users rather than FOR them is what creates the big difference from the way things already happen. Understanding people and how they feel is crucial.
Understand people. Practice empathy. Design holistically.

AssociateAmeriCorps VISTAJun 2014 - Sep 2014 (3 months)The project goal was to increase the capacity of the school to improve student achievement through direct services and resource development for Kohala Public Schools.
Provided tutorial services for students in credit recovery/enrichment activities. Administered pre-test to assess education levels. Grouped students with similar needs, and provided intervention services. Assessed and tracked student progress. Planned and executed enrichment activities in Summer Bridge Program.
Fully developed the school’s internship program. Identified and recruited community resources (organizations, businesses that actively support students in a semester long internship). Created guidelines for community partners who would participate in the program. Created application packets.
Assembled all legal documentation for multiple stakeholders. Oversaw student-internship supervisor interviews and conducted training session.
Implemented and launched program in September 2014. -
Maître d'HotelThe Lady and SonsSep 2012 - Sep 2014 (2 years)Interacted with and tended to the needs of all including guests, staff, and administration. Encouraged guests to feel comfortable by engaging with them on a personal level. Maintained a service-oriented attitude. Had a key role in an establishment that serves 1,600+ people per day.

Service DesignerSavannah College of Art and DesignJan 2014 - Apr 2014 (3 months)SCADpad is a micro-housing project developed by Savannah College of Art and Design. Part of an interdisciplinary group of SCAD students assigned to design every aspect of a SCADpad- ranging from its architectural footprint, to things like 3-D printed bathroom fixtures, and the carpet- to fit in a parking space. Designed the next-generation micro-homes on the parking deck of SCAD Atlanta. Conducted usability testing in Spring 2014. Used laser cutting and 3D modeling skills to build and brand high fidelity prototypes.

Building Design and Concept DevelopmentHawaii Preparatory AcademySep 2011 - Apr 2012 (7 months)Produced a sustainable field station with Hawaii Preparatory Academy LEED Certified Energy Lab. Designed to harvest and clean native vegetables and plants. Serves as a shelter for a fully-functioning aquaponics system. Developed the building design and assisted with the purpose and future of the field station.
