Rain Play - Funnel to enjoy rain (Thesis work) Please watch the video at the end ! - My thesis is called Rain Play. Rain turns a good day bad. It makes gray clouds in the sky and within us and gets everything wet. Parents protect their kids from the rain and shelter them from getting wet. Kids, however, enjoy the experiences of such a "bad" day. They are fun seekers and their curiosity never dries out. This project takes a look at rain from this angle, and explores the possibility to change people’s perceptions through design.
Funnel to enjoy rain(Thesis work) - This product is designed to live outdoors. The top funnel collects rain. As it fills to a specific amount, the weight of the water opens a valve that allows a drop to flow through the tube and be released onto the main funnel surface. The beauty of this funnel can transform an indoor rainy day into outdoor fun times.

The surface is covered with millions of microscopic hairs that create little air pockets below the water droplet. When water falls onto the surface, it simply beads up and rolls off.

Funnel to enjoy rain(Thesis work) - Started with a sigh, “A rainy day” is most commonly perceived as bad.

I asked myself, what aspects of rain can I discover that are positive.
Funnel to enjoy rain(Thesis work) - Rain makes beautiful sound. It transports. It enhances color. It magnifies what is below. It can make magical water droplets.
Funnel to enjoy rain(Thesis work) - One of the most interesting discoveries that I came across was the Lily pad. The magical surface of the lilypad is hydrophobic. The surface is covered with millions of microscopic hairs that create little air pockets below the water droplet. When water falls onto the surface, it simply beads up and rolls off, taking dust and dirt with it.
Funnel to enjoy rain(Thesis work) - Discovering an exhibit at the science museum in Queens, displaying celestial mechanics, I was touched by the beautiful object and the revolving metal balls. They reminded me of my lily pad.
Funnel to enjoy rain(Thesis work) - For my first model I recreated the exact curve of the machine. Not realizing that because the mass of water is completely different than steel, that curve didn’t work. So I realized I had to start tweaking.

For next model I made the curve less steep and change it to slight S curve. but water still wanted to go off the funnel and It also didn't really work
For the third model, I made it with higher edge and less steep curve. and finally water stayed in the funnel and made cool movements.
