The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design at the University of Houston invites applications for a Presidential Frontiers Faculty (PFF) Tenure Track Assistant Professor position. The Presidential Frontier Faculty program is a university-wide integrated interdisciplinary hiring campaign that is overseen by central university leadership, and encompasses hiring a large cohort of convergence research faculty to work on health, energy, sustainability and security. We are seeking an accomplished professional with an established track record of transformative and inclusive Industrial Design research and practice. We are interested in design methods for the healthcare industry, specifically medical devices, human-machine interfaces, and wearable technologies for remote health and wellness. The successful applicants will also receive a joint appointment in the University’s Cullen College of Engineering.
Under direct support by the University of Houston's primary research thrust for health, this position offers a generous start-up package including dedicated funding, time, and facilities to pursue interdisciplinary research and design practice.
The Industrial Design program at the College has established itself as a highly competitive award-winning institution on both the national and international design landscape. One area with a rapid growth within the program is research and design for healthcare. Extensive collaborations with institutions and industries have generated intellectual properties and external funding. The city of Houston provides an ideal context for the discipline with resources unique to the metro area, in particular, the Texas Medical Center (the world’s largest medical complex) and numerous companies specialized in healthcare-related technology development.
This tenure-track position reflects the College’s strategic expansion in healthcare innovation through collaboration with institutions and industry partners. The ideal candidate will have experience in leading multi-disciplinary research and design projects in an academic or industry setting, demonstrated understanding and expertise of best practices in design for healthcare, understanding of the value and potential in inclusive design for a diverse population and community, a track record of successful design leadership, and an entrepreneurial mindset that embraces critical thinking, innovation, and service. The candidate will be a leader to foster a climate of collaboration in the University community and support a positive and energetic environment that focuses upon excellence in design research and practice. The candidate’s research initiatives will be fully supported by the College’s Advanced Media Technology Lab with cutting-edge prototyping systems including robotics, additive manufacturing, and interactive technologies.
This is a joint position across the College of Architecture and Design and the Cullen College of Engineering. As a member of the academic faculty at the College of Architecture and Design, this position is responsible for research, limited teaching within the Industrial Design program, and service, with a 25% shared research and teaching responsibility at the Cullen College of Engineering. The teaching component would center on the Cullen College of Engineering Capstone Design program.
Specific responsibilities include:?
• Lead and expand collaboration in healthcare research and design within the University
• Participate in seeking and securing external grants and funding to support research
• Participate in expanding industry collaboration / P3 partnerships
• Participate in the new healthcare initiative to address critical societal issues
• Develop intellectual property and oversee production and implementation
• Develop a recurring revenue stream via product sales and licensing
• Limited load of teaching and service
• Supply the medical industry with graduates fully prepared for integration
• Participate in the planning and expansion of a world-class healthcare lab on the UH Sugarland campus

Qualified candidates for the position must have a terminal degree in industrial design or related disciplines. The candidate should have an outstanding portfolio of cross-disciplinary practice evidenced by a record of publication in design-related fields, success in competitively funded scholarly/professional activities, as well as a demonstrated commitment to excellence in design. The candidate should bring a high profile of industry experience most notably in design, product development, and healthcare research. A willingness to lead and the ability to collaborate in the process of building organizations (i.e. the lab/incubator) is preferred.
