Job Description

Scholastic Inc. is looking for a designer to join an art department in its trade division. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone passionate about reading who would value the opportunity to design illustrated books that support early readers across the globe. The designer will sit in-house at Scholastic's headquarters building in SoHo with a six month, renewable, temporary contract.

The designer's primary job responsibilities are to:
• Manage a full list of books each season, keeping all the titles on schedule
• Design multiple cover options
• Design interior design templates
• Design pre-layouts and route them for approval
• Pour sketches into mechanicals and route them for approval
• Manage the communication and implementation of sketch edits
• Pour finished art into mechanicals and route them for approval
• Liaison with editorial and the illustrator to communicate the current status of production schedules
• Prepare mechanicals for printed and digital F&Gs when needed
• Preflight jacket and interior files
• Prepare files for final release to manufacturing
• Manage the creation of marketing assets as needed
• Build imprint and series process docs, templates, and branding guides as needed

The ideal candidate for the designer position has…
• a bachelor's degree in art or design
• at least 2 years of relevant experience
• a mastery of design principles
• a mastery of Adobe Creative Suite
• an end-to-end understanding of the book production process
• a collaborative approach to file/folder structures
• spectacular communication skills
• a meticulous approach to organization
• the ability to attend to details while multitasking
• the ability to take direction yet maintain intuition
