Job Description

Workman Publishing’s children’s department is growing! We’re a small, creative, collaborative team of editors and designers focused on creating innovative nonfiction for children ages 0–14. We’re looking for a Designer/Senior Designer who can translate complicated ideas into exciting learning experiences for kids. We ideate books ranging from board books to complex novelty formats to graphic novels—so we need someone who’s flexible and excited about a creative challenge.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

-You’re an idea person who can imagine a number of visual possibilities for a book
-You love to collaborate with editors, illustrators, and other designers to develop new ideas
-You thrive working on a project with a lot of pieces—and using design to make the project feel lively and engaging
-You’re a great listener who responds thoughtfully to feedback
-You’re a detail-oriented perfectionist who sees revision as an opportunity to grow
-You’re gratified by a project that is running smoothly and adept at problem-solving when a book needs some extra TLC
-Excellent type skills are essential
-Must be an experienced project manager who can partner and coordinate with other departments
-Must be able to work under tight deadlines

Here are some of the things you might do in a typical week:

-Collaborate with editors to create several concepts for a new book’s interior
-Research, hire, and communicate with illustrators
-Resolve the design of a book that’s hit an unexpected snag—and keep it on schedule
-Attend a production meeting, prepared with notes on the status of all our children’s titles
-Participate in our weekly children’s development meeting, where we share inspiration and brainstorm exciting new projects

Qualifications:

-3–5 years of experience, including initial concept generation
-BFA degree in design or a related field
-A portfolio that shows great ideation, design, and type skills—hand-lettering and illustration skills are a big plus.
-Advanced skill level in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop

And a little about us:

We are publishers of award-winning children’s books, including the Brain Quest, Indestructibles, and Big Fat Notebook series. We also publish gift books, fiction, humor, cookbooks, and parenting/pregnancy guides, as well as books on gardening and country living.
