The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has an opening for a Director of the School of Art and Design in the College of Fine and Applied Arts (FAA). We are searching for a director with creative vision and administrative acumen to lead a thriving multidisciplinary School of Art and Design located within a R1 University. The ability to cultivate a culture of diversity and belonging with faculty and staff to support research, teaching, and service across disciplines is essential. The ideal candidate will be able to build community, work collaboratively and have experience in one or more of the fields represented in the School (Art Education, Art History, Design, and Studio Art), and have the capacity to connect with other units and the many research institutes on campus.

As the School's Chief Executive Officer, the Director fulfills all statutory functions required for ensuring the unit's successful delivery of expected contributions to the university's research, teaching, and public engagement missions. Educational contributions include the delivery of seven undergraduate programs of study, more than ten graduate programs, and non-major instruction to campus, all in fulfillment of national accreditation standards for a number of diverse academic and professional fields. The School's research and engagement responsibilities include the advancement of scholarly and creative fields through knowledge-creation, partnership with professions on preparation for work in diverse sectors, and public presentation through partnerships with the Krannert Art Museum and other university and regional venues.

This full-time, benefits-eligible, tenured position on a twelve-month service basis, reporting to the Dean of FAA. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications; the desired start date would be as early as July 1 and no later than Aug 1.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Academic Leadership:

• Ensure appropriate instructional staffing for all courses, working with the Dean's Office to communicate and address regular and emergent needs.
• Apply departmental policy to assignment of teaching duties across faculty and teaching assistant roles.
• Ensure departmental fulfillment of appropriate accreditation requirements and academic program review goals, working with faculty and staff on evaluation of learning outcomes.
• Carry out (or delegate, where possible) student disciplinary and grievance processes as called for by department, college, or campus policies and code.
• Coordinate departmental undergraduate and graduate recruitment strategies; see to the appropriate application of criteria for admission and stewardship of funding support.
• Monitor advising needs and see to their fulfillment through department, college, and campus resources.
• Draw on college and university resources to support faculty development in instruction, research and innovation, service and advising across all ranks.

Departmental Leadership and Administration:

• Provide leadership, direction, and oversight of faculty processes related to recruitment, appointment, engagement, retention, evaluation for promotion, professional development, leaves, faculty awards and recognition.
• Supervise enactment of university, college, and department promotion and tenure policies at the departmental level.
• Oversee annual faculty evaluations, policies and procedures related to faculty development, including promotion in faculty rank.

Executive Leadership:

• Oversee the department budget working in consultation with the Assistant Dean for Finance and with the School's Executive committee in preparing the departmental budget.
• Work closely with FAA Human Resources on policy/procedure review and implementation, hiring/promoting employees, training, performance evaluations, payroll concerns, employee immigration needs, employee relations issues, and any other Human Resources related activity.
• Identify space, technology, and equipment needs; work with college to address and maintain them.
• Serve as point of critical and emergency contact in crisis management scenarios.
• Supervise the School's staff, ensuring appropriate recognition and opportunities for advancement.

Governance and Policy:

• Work with faculty to update and maintain School's strategic plan; monitor progress and ensure appropriate prioritization of efforts to achieve goals.
• Facilitate processes of education, orientation, and accountability with regard to the creation of just and equitable learning, research, and engagement; draw on college and campus DEIA resources to ensure continuous improvement in this area.
• Represent unit in FAA Administrative Council; convey information as appropriate to unit faculty and staff.

External Relations:

• Maintain communications and relationships with alumni, and the profession, and discipline, representing the work of the department for these constituents as needed.
• Partner, collaborate, and strategize with FAA Advancement office on all things related to advancement, including fundraising, communication, stewardship, engagement, and donor relations.
• Work with college advancement staff to identify fundraising opportunities and goals; assist in achievement cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of gifts.

Required Qualifications:

• Record of distinguished achievement in scholarly or creative accomplishment, research and teaching that meets criteria for appointment as Professor with tenure for a field represented by the School of Art and Design.

• Terminal degree in field of specialization.
• At least five years of successful leadership experience with increasingly higher levels of responsibility in an institution of higher education.
• A record of focus on equity in management of others' labor.
• Experience with and interest in understanding role divisions in a complex organization and supporting individuals' success in fulfilling them.
• Embedding achievement of big goals within long-standing processes and structures
• A demonstrated track record of achievement as a strong and collaborative leader and administrator, providing evidence of a capacity to lead.
• Established record reflecting successful communication with stakeholders including faculty, other administrators, staff, students, and alumni.
• Strong evidence of being eager and able to lead, recruit, retain, and support a diverse and eminent faculty, staff, and student body.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to collaborate with administrators, academic staff, faculty, and students from various disciplinary areas.
• Commitment to building and maintaining diversity across the student, faculty, and staff populations.
• Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with faculty and academic leaders; an ability to foster the belonging of all, diversity, equity, and inclusion in all its forms (i.e., racial, gender, socio-economic, intellectual, methodological, disciplinary, and others)
• The capacity to foster and maintain collaborations among faculty and campus leaders.
• The ability to listen closely to the needs of students, faculty, and staff.
• Knowledge of the mental health and wellness needs for students, staff, and faculty.
• Experience with and knowledge of faculty and academic structures, policies, and procedures at the University of Illinois.
• Sound, data-driven, and transparent decision making as it relates to strategic growth.
• An ability to communicate effectively across all internal and external constituencies, including alumni in an articulate, inspiring, and diplomatic way.
