As the Director of Design and User Research, you focus on partnering with clients to develop design research across physical and digital product design initiatives. You oversee the daily activities of the Design Research team, serving as a leader through mentoring, professional development, and maintaining team effectiveness. You're excited about the opportunity to grow a Design Research discipline in a consultancy setting.
Manage research initiatives across varied project types, including both generative and evaluative research projects.
Analyze, distill, and present research findings to communicate compelling and actionable innovation foci for clients.
Translate qualitative research into actionable insights and opportunities for product strategies.
Effectively communicate and collaborate with outside quantitative research partners.
Mentor and plan professional development opportunities for discipline staff.
Lead clients through the problem-definition and research process and methodologies by planning and facilitating information-gathering sessions with clients and key stakeholders.
Contribute to business development by clearly articulating the benefits of design and user research. Collaborate with leadership to develop and communicate our vision for the Design Research department.
Plan work and resource allocation on projects.
More About You
You preferably have an advanced degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Anthropology, Industrial Design, Psychology, Sociology, or a related discipline. You have at least 7-10 years' experience of hands-on, professional, user experience research and analysis. You have a proven track record of generating insights based on front-end research and presenting them to project teams and externally to clients. You also have experience leading research projects and mentoring team members. You have a good understanding of research methodologies, with experience in both quantitative and qualitative research. Your experience in both research worlds allows you to effectively interface with outside quantitative research partners, while possessing a deep understand of qualitative methods. Ideally, most of your experience has been with the consumer product industry, but you understand the medical device world as well.
You believe in cross-discipline communication and place a high value on collaboration. You have managerial experience in leading teams and presenting to C-suite executives. You have worked in a consulting environment for at least five years and are familiar with how they operate. You can work on-site in our office in downtown Philadelphia.

You have a true passion for user experience and design research, as evidenced by your career and education choices. You are familiar with how to plan and conduct research, and have experience applying human factors principles to the design of consumer, commercial, and medical products. You demonstrate high standards of workmanship and attention to detail. You are comfortable leading the creation of departmental processes and best practices. You can serve as a high-level technical contributor for heuristic assessments, interviews, comparative/competitive analysis, observations, and more.

You like to explore new territories and learn from others. You can successfully lead clients through problem definition and the innovation process during workshop sessions. You have a deep understanding of design research principles, methodologies, concepting processes, approaches, and tools, and will take the initiative to apply them to our design research efforts. You are also comfortable with global travel (role may include up to 25% travel), either on your own or as part of a team. You feel confident leading research teams wherever you're operating.

You have established yourself in thought-leadership within the research industry. You'll be a leading voice both internally and externally — publishing blog posts, speaking at conferences, and promoting Bresslergroup as an industry leader in product design.
You are comfortable with ambiguity and complexity, because sometimes that leads to the most unique, unexpected design solutions. You possess a strong work ethic and are willing to "do what it takes" to get the job done.
You have excellent writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills — all needed for research, facilitation, interviews, and client presentations. You are an effective listener and contributor at client meetings and can present Bresslergroup's capabilities to prospective clients. You possess strong empathy and exceptional verbal communication skills that allow to you to communicate with anyone, and unlock what users are thinking and feeling about a product.
