Position Information

Join us as a full-time professor of user experience design at the Visual Communication Department at Austin Community College. ACC is the first community college in the country to offer a two-year, associates degree for user experience design. You will join a growing team of full-time faculty, working closely with adjunct faculty employed by local companies such as IBM, Dell, and VRBO. You’ll teach applied, hands-on courses to small classes of diverse students. Our classes will be taught in the heart of Austin at our brand-new Highland Campus facilities; this campus’ features include a creative digital media center with facilities for radio, TV, film, visual design, game, motion graphics and music, as well as a STEM lab with simulation equipment for health sciences programs.

Current Work of the Department/Discipline

The Visual Communication Department provides workforce education and training to students, leading to certificates and degrees in graphic media production, graphic design, visual design, and user experience design. Our faculty deliver instruction in the latest tools, technology, and user-centered design frameworks. At the end of their degree, students produce a portfolio of their work and participate in an internship or client-based design studio class, allowing them to bridge their education with workforce experience.

Job Summary

Responsible to prepare and deliver Visual Communication Department's User Experience Design coursework in engaging, innovative, and discipline-appropriate ways that reflect a commitment to success equity, respect for diversity, an understanding of culturally responsive teaching, and knowledge of the teaching field. Meets professional standards for faculty in accordance with college policies and procedures.

The focus of this position is User Experience/User Interface.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties

Teach introductory and advanced courses in the User Experience Design program area which may include (but are not limited to) subjects such as: Foundations of Design, Interaction Design, User Research and Information Architecture, Product Strategy, Design Technology, and User Interface Design.
Participate actively in departmental responsibilities and departmental governance, including curriculum review and revision, program review, assessment of student learning outcomes at the course and program level, and other departmental activities.
Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.
Serve as a mentor to students in the Visual Communication program.
Provide teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner which does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories.
Remain current in the field through a variety of professional development activities.
Support division and department goals through active and collegial engagement in decision-making and unit-level planning.
Serve on collegewide and departmental committees, councils, work groups, and task forces.
Perform other related tasks as assigned by the department chair, dean, and/or associate vice president, vice president, executive vice president.

Additional Duties

Teaches introductory and advanced courses in the User Experience Design program area which may include (but are not limited to) subjects such as: Interaction Design, Design Research, Product Design, Prototyping, and User Interface Design.
Develops and maintains the User Experience curriculum within the Visual Communication Department.

Advises and mentors students in the Visual Communication Department's workforce degree and certificate programs (User Experience Design Specialization), and guides students in the production of a professional quality portfolio.
Coordinates Visual Communication adjunct faculty in the User Experience Design area, and also serves as a liaison between the User Experience Design program and area high-school technology preparatory programs.
