Job Description

ASSA ABLOY is looking highly skilled Industrial Designer to join our product development team at our US headquarters in New Haven, Connecticut.

This position involves working under the supervision of the Industrial Design Manager for our Americas Division and as part of our international team of designers. This is an outstanding opportunity to be fully involved and experience all phases of product development, from concept thru to market launch.

The emphasis of the role is on conceptual development activities including sketching/ideation, 3D modelling, prototyping, documenting the development process, and acting as a liaison between sales, marketing, engineering and suppliers. The position will also expose the individual to the business side of design, so flexibility in work routine, to support multiple projects simultaneously, will be the key to the their success.

Responsibilities include, leading assignments focused on aesthetic exploration and development activities resulting in compelling hardware and door control solutions that are viable for the business, technically feasible, and desirable for customers and end-user alike. The right individual will be a self-motivated problem solver that enjoys the finite details of the product development process, is passionate about design, style, and decorating!

Participate in customer research
Prepare trend presentations outlining decorative hardware design directions
Assist in researching current marketplace to identify key products, gaps, and/or applicable design ideas
Help set aesthetic direction for the refresh of current product platforms, apply corporate Design Language principles, and define physical user experiences for new products & platforms
Maintain a strong working knowledge of material and process technologies applicable to new product development
Communicate effectively with domestic & international team members, customers, domestic and overseas suppliers including travel to facilitate research or coordinate manufacturing (ability to travel up to 20% of time or as needed, domestically and internationally)
Love to work collaboratively in a group and have an innate willingness to dig in and contribute with your team

Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design. Experience and enthusiasm in commercial furniture or interior design is a huge plus!
3-5 years professional experience designing and developing consumer or commercial products for manufacturing
Appropriate knowledge of product design and development processes
A strong eye for architectural trends & surface finishes, scale & proportion, and the ability to design towards multiple tastes and styles
Knowledge of product engineering and manufacturing processes
Experience developing components and systems for products, specifically electromechanical, as well as experience or knowledge of castings, forgings, injection mouldings and press form parts.
Appropriate expertise with 3D product design & presentation software - Solidworks & Keyshot
Proficiency in digital design and communications software packages - Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop, and Microsoft Office products.
