DEKA Research and Development is seeking experienced and passionate Industrial Designers with an interest in making a positive impact on people’s lives through design. Projects at DEKA cover a variety of sectors including robotic prosthetics; medical devices for home and hospital use; mobility devices for persons with disabilities; water purification for various applications; solutions for clean, sustainable energy and more innovative projects.
The Design Group at DEKA is a multidisciplinary team of Industrial Designers, User Interface and User Experience Designers, Graphic Designers, Human Factors Researchers, and Prototyping Engineers. Functioning as an in-house consultancy and integrated into the various projects at DEKA, the Design Group collaborates with project teams to research user needs and provide design solutions that blend the technology solution with the human need. In a nutshell, we shoot for the stars with the perfect marriage between breakthrough technology and unimaginable design.

What you will do:
The individual in this role will collaborate closely with teams of engineers, user interface designers, and human factors specialists to take projects through all phases of the product development process – from the early concept development stage to get ready for mass production.
Discover: Participate in or conduct various forms of design research, i.e., contextual inquiry, product benchmarking, usability testing; interact with engineers, users, and other resources to collect insights.
Define: Create viable concepts and criteria using the findings from for discover phase; explore viable technology and systems in collaboration with engineers; concept exploration through hand sketching and prototyping (low to high fidelity).
Develop: Synthesize the concept, form language, technology, usability, and other factors; create detailed idea sketches, renders, and 3D computer models as well as physical models.
Deliver: Participate in material and manufacturing process selection; specify color, finish and inspection criteria of manufactured parts; communicate design related deliverables to project managers and team members; participate in product validation.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design or similar major with 5+ years’ experience or Master’s degree with 3+ years’ experience; medical design experience is preferred but not required.
Professional skills: Ability to conduct design research and develop design concepts and criteria; ability to explore ideas with sketches, excellent, and skills of aesthetics; proficiency in the use of SolidWorks and Adobe Creative Suite; ability to make study models and prototypes.
Quality communication: Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication; ability to clearly communicate designs to different audiences throughout the product development process
