The MDes in Design Innovation currently comprises six programmes, three of which are delivered at our Glasgow campus, and three in our Altyre campus on the edge of Forres, near Inverness in the Highlands. We are also developing two new awards for delivery from September 2022:
The Forres-based programmes are:
• Design Innovation and Environmental Design
• Design Innovation and Interaction Design
• Design Innovation and Transformation Design
• Design Innovation and Future Heritage (from 2022)
• Design Innovation and Circular Economy (from 2022)
The Glasgow-based programmes are:
• Design Innovation and Citizenship
• Design Innovation and Collaborative Creativity
• Design Innovation and Service Design
The Innovation School is committed to the development of design-led education, practice and research, the generation of social and economic impact in a non-metropolitan context. This role will involve delivery across the Design Innovation (PGT) portfolio, as well as the opportunity to contribute to the academic evolution of the Innovation School, and its “post-disciplinary” approach to artefacts, services and interactions.

The Highlands and Islands campus is central to the exploration of how The Innovation School can help citizens, scientists, technologists and communities envisage a people and planet centred approach to design-led innovation. This means developing our existing portfolio and creating new academic opportunities for a diverse student body, with complex educational ambitions.

The Role

Job Title: Lecturer in Design Innovation (Service Design) – fixed term
Location GSA Glasgow Campus
Reports to Joint-Academic Lead, Innovation School (Glasgow)
Purpose To contribute to the teaching of our Glasgow-based programmes in Innovation School with particular emphasis on Service Design.
To develop teaching materials that explore how design-led innovation can be explored as part of a political discourse around human well-being, social justice and ecological concern.
To create appropriate educational materials and approaches that support student learning, staff scholarship and research, and evidence the evolution of practice.
To engender collaborative creative endeavours within student projects that combine experience, expertise and forms of social interaction with a design-led innovation process.
To contribute to the planning and evolution of Innovation School curricula, by managing existing delivery and supporting the development of new curricular components and learning opportunities.
To assist with assessment of submissions as well as applications for the next academic year.

Key Accountabilities:
Academic / Educational
• Demonstrate an excellence in delivering design-led innovation social innovation to students on our postgraduate programmes
• Support student learning and staff delivery in the field of Design-Led Innovation through collaboration with partners offering external experience/expertise
• Capacity to develop innovative approaches to academic delivery and support student learning and attainment
• Capacity to assess of programme applications for the next academic year.
• Offer academic oversight and provision of pastoral responsibilities in respect of students

Operational
• Seek to further develop an approach to design-led innovation practice within contemporary contexts
• Work with colleagues to develop and deliver the curriculum at postgraduate level
• Assist with the co-ordination of educational activities, engagements and academic materials for curricular delivery, as appropriate
• Undertake Health and Safety duties and observe procedures within own area of responsibility in relation to all Staff, Students and Visitors, where appropriate.

Strategic
• Contribute to the Innovation School teaching, learning and assessment at postgraduate level.
• Development of student learning, academic opportunities and professional development.
Key Challenges
• Contribute to debates around Design-Led Innovation and a “people and planet” approach to contemporary practice
• Engagement with Quality Assurance processes and sector wide enhancement initiatives and their institutional impact (ELIR/Periodic Review etc.)

Person Specification
Experience and knowledge
• Passion for learning and creativity, strong personal commitment to academic endeavour
• A research/teaching/practice profile in Design-Led Innovation or related areas
• A high-level understanding of design / creative methods
• Teaching experience in a Higher Education Institutions or comparable organisations, preferably a Design/Innovation School, or design consultancy
• Awareness of current debates, trends and issues relating to the expanding field of Design-Led Innovation
• Knowledge of research methodologies and methods applied to design projects and the field of Design-Led Innovation

Skills
• Excellent team-working and collaboration skills
• High level of motivation and creative interpersonal skills for teaching in a studio environment
• Ability to manage complex situations and multiple tasks, as required
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to use a range of knowledge delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students
• Ability to work individually and as part of a team to agreed objectives, and to tight deadlines
• Ability to adjust and respond to the needs of changing environments
• Ability to work to high professional standards, including planning, co-ordination and delivery of learning resources
• Experience or interest in pedagogy relating to Design-Led Innovation
• Capacity to explore and interrogate complexity in communities, societies and the world
• Ability to prototype innovative and experimental approaches in collaboration with students, and members of staff across GSA
• Awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural diversity

Terms and Conditions
Contract: Fixed Term 0.6 FTE
Probationary Period: 3 Months
It is recognised that there is an inevitable ‘settling in’ period in any post. The probationary period is therefore an opportunity for the employee to fit within the culture of the School. It should also be determined during this time whether the job is in line with expectations as expressed in pre-appointment discussions, interview and as set out in the Job Description. The probation period for this role is three months.
Accredited teaching:
It is expected that successful candidate will undertake the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching & Learning Certificate as part of this post.
Salary Grade 7, £39739 - £50,296 pro rata
Holidays: 35 days plus 11 statutory holidays per annum (pro rata)
Pension: Teachers Pension (STSS)
Notice Period: 1 month
