In this role, you’ll be an essential part of our mission to inspire creativity and imagination in children throughout the world with thoughtfully designed toys that spark free play.

As the senior package designer/director, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining packaging that is on point with our diverse line of products, as well as creating an overall branded look that can easily be recognized and associated with Melissa & Doug product. Our timeless products are geared toward the mass and specialty markets, and include toys, arts and crafts, activity books, puzzles, games and more. Your responsibilities would include managing our small talented staff of package designers, guiding them with constructive criticism, sharing in design responsibilities, presenting designs to senior management for eventual approval, and maintaining schedules in regards to all of packaging needs. A familiarity of various packaging materials, innovative structures, and the ability to create templates and assembly instructions is required. You should have an excellent eye for color and graphics and be able to assist both the designers and photographers in creating dynamic designs with mass appeal.

You should have a minimum of 10 years of packaging and graphic design experience, preferably in the children’s market, and your portfolio should demonstrate a sense of whimsy that is applicable to product in the toy industry. Five of these years should have been spent in a managerial role.

You will report directly to the Head of Product and work closely with Product and Graphic Designers as well as our Marketing, Engineers, Product Development and Quality Assurance teams. You should be a self-motivator, able to lead by example, maintain tight deadlines, and inspire the team through your passion for our brand and mission. A background designing packaging for children’s toys or product is a definite plus.


Determine packaging design direction of entire product categories and collections.
Collaborate with senior leadership to drive the creation and execution of a comprehensive packaging strategy.
Lead a team of designers to create packaging for a wide variety of products (boxes, hangtags, inserts, blisters, clamshells, etc), including die lines and product instructions.
Coordinate with Licensors when creating co-branded packaging.
Drive a culture of originality and product differentiation.
Manage project schedules and budgets.
Create detailed technical drawings with artwork taking into account cost factors and printing limitations.
Guide in-house photographers during product photo shoots and help style shoots.
Color correct digital files and assist in building packaging mock-ups.
Be familiar with archiving and documenting visual assets in a DAM (Digital Asset Management system).
Communicate extensively with Marketing, Product Designers, Product Development, Compliance and Quality Assurance teams throughout design process, including reviewing and proofing packaging.
Manage packaging standards to ensure a high execution.


BFA or equivalent degree in Graphic Design
10+ years of consumer product or toy design experience
5+ leading and developing creative teams
Advanced command of Adobe Creative Suite: Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.
Knowledge of print production and understanding of its limitations.
Honed ideation and conceptual skills
Superb technical drawing skills combined with a strong attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Strong organizational skills, including developing plans to reach final deliverables
Ability to work in or adapt to a PC-based environment.
