The Department of Forest Biomaterials at North Carolina State University requests applications for a new faculty position in product and industrial design with a focus on the use of sustainable materials and technologies. This position will be a non-tenure track, 12-month appointment as an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of the Practice, and will commence in Spring 2020.
The successful candidate is expected to assume a leadership role at NCSU in developing new directions in sustainable product/industrial design. The appointee will demonstrate (a) the capacity for conducting unique creative work that emphasizes sustainable design pursued through technological, environmental, and/or economic innovation, and equitable distribution of resources; (b) the ability to teach a combination of practice-based studio classes and large lecture courses; and (c) the skill to collaboratively participate in the activities, service, and life of the department, university, and the broader academic, professional, commercial and public communities.
• PhD or terminal degree in industrial design, industrial engineering, wood products, mechanical engineering or related field.
• Relevant background for teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Capacity to design products using sustainable materials and technologies.
• Ability to operate and supervise the use of equipment typically found in modern fabrication shops including routers, lathes, saws, etc.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
• Demonstrated experience working with industry
• Ability to obtain externally funded projects.
• Demonstrated history of innovation.
• Excellent oral, visual and written communication skills
About the Department of Forest Biomaterials: The Department of Forest Biomaterials is part of NC State University's College of Natural Resources and offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs in Sustainable Materials and Technology and in Paper Science and Engineering.
