The Illustrator and Designer create scientific figures, graphics, and other materials that appear in Cell Press journals, online, and in special commercial products. The Illustrator maintains and evolves a consistent illustration style for the flagship journal’s front section, introduces new technologies and workflows, innovates in print and digital media, and manages deadlines and timelines.
This role investigates and implements new types of illustrative and multimedia content that could appear in Cell Press journals and homepages and works to extend the reach of the illustration program.
LINKS: Produce posters, covers, graphics, SnapShots, and other special content.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Conceptualize and create illustrations from authors’ rough sketches or electronic files. Create ideas for illustrations where the author of an article has not provided suggestions.
-Assist with management of freelance illustration model.-Perform quality control on freelanced art and design work. -Research and license photographic images where appropriate.-Liaise with Cell editors, authors, and suppliers. -Attend outside seminars and lecture on industry trends.-Stay tuned to web and design innovations on competing journals.-Think creatively about new ideas and features.
-3-5 years of illustration and design-related work experience
-High proficiency in digital illustration software Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
-Proficiency in Adobe InDesign
-Abilities in other relevant creative software a plus
-Portfolio demonstrating high proficiency in illustration and design software
-Strong visualization skills to transform complex information into 2D or 3D images
-Good understanding of science to be able to conceptualize scientific ideas
-Detail-oriented, quality-driven, thorough, accurate
-Strong organizational skills with correspondingly strong follow-up ability
-Strong communication skills, verbal & written
-Effective interpersonal skills
-Ability to handle a multitude of tasks
-Bachelor's or Master's degree in Visual Arts, Graphic Design or related degree program
