Job Description

Under direction of the Design leadership, the Staff Designer will support all aspects of the product design process. During development of the assigned projects, they will grow all core design skills, learn and adhere to the timing and action calendar, gain an understanding of the steps needed for execution of the product from concept to post design finalization, and work with cross functional team members during all aspects of execution. Projects will be assigned by Design Management and the designer will adjust their priorities based on the needs of the business.


DESIGN: Learn and refine how to Design and Develop products defined by the project briefs within a FOB goal. In this execution of the process they will do research, generate concepts, validate products, review usage patterns and ergonomics, generate 3D data, define materials and process, explore aesthetics, select color, generate tech packs and supportive collateral information for product execution, and use DSG available metrics.

DRIVE INNVOATION: Learn how to push beyond the core product ask and Introduce innovation within various categories. Use available resources and tools to define product opportunities. Work with design management and product manager to justify the business case and size of the opportunity. Ground the concepts with trend, research, category history, and tangible data. These projects will fall within and outside the T&A calendar.

COLLABORATE: In conjunction with Design Management, work with cross functional teams to ensure designs are accurate and complete as defined by the project brief. Changes defined during the development process are updated and communicated on all appropriate channels.

DRIVE ADOPTION: Create and deliver effective, cohesive product presentations to maximize adoption with the merchants. This includes the uses and understanding of various tools available. (i.e. first insight, qualitative/quantitative research, trend analysis, and review of available metrics.)

TRACK PROJECTS: Project manage and track updates , for all assigned projects, during development and ensure all data and information is accurate on PLM. Then follow through to production.

WORK WITH EXTERNAL RESOURCES: In conjunction with Design Management, work with internal, external, and foreign resources to obtain the required deliverables as define by the timing and action calendar. If required communicate with the HKO office and directly with manufacturing vendors to maintain design and functional intent. Working with external resources for execution of design work will be limited at this level, but expected for prototype needs.


Bachelor's Degree- Industrial Design
1-3 Years Relevant experience

DICK’S Sporting Goods was founded in 1948 when an 18 year-old Dick Stack was working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York. An avid fisherman, Dick was approached by the store owner to come up with a list of products needed to get into the fishing tackle business. After Dick presented his suggestions, the owner told him he was a dumb kid and had no idea what he was doing. Dick was upset and promptly quit. He went to his grandmother’s house where he spent a lot of time as a kid and told her what had happened. Dick’s grandmother asked how much it would cost to build the store himself. Dick said it would cost $300. His grandmother then went to the cookie jar where she kept her life savings and gave him $300 and told him “do it yourself.” Dick used that money and his relentless work-ethic to open a bait-and-tackle shop in Binghamton. By 1958, he expanded his product line to include much of what you’ll find at DICK’S Sporting Goods today. Ed Stack, Dick’s son, is the current CEO and Chairman of DICK’S Sporting Goods. He and his siblings bought the store from their father and are responsible for taking two stores and growing the chain to over 500 stores.
