The Eva and Marc Besen International Research Chair in Design is based within the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture, at Monash’s Caulfield campus in Melbourne, Australia. Funded through the generosity of the Besen family, the position provides the opportunity for a renowned design academic / practitioner with international reach to assume a leadership role in shaping the world’s design future.

There has never been more urgency for design to confront the challenges facing people and planet. The position will empower the successful candidate to address these challenges head on, through one of the lenses of the faculty’s research themes of Reimagining Cities, Health & Human Experience and Expansive Visions and Technologies.

The appointee will have a proven track record in design leadership; demonstrated through engagement with practice and/or scholarship and the achievement of impact in the world.

The Besen Chair will: conduct high impact international level practice-based design research; lead collaborative studio-based research on large-scale projects, fostering cross disciplinary and industry partnerships; be a strong advocate for Design within the university and across external communities; contribute to the growth of our design research labs, mentor staff and build capacity; and contribute to teaching and research training through guest lectures, involvement in crit sessions and PhD supervision.

An outstanding record of excellence and impact in academic or practice-based design research projects, supported by a relevant doctoral qualification or equivalent experience
