Illinois Wesleyan University and the Ames School of Art invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Industrial Design. This position is a two-year appointment beginning August, 2020. We are seeking an individual with expertise in product design to contribute to the Design, Technology, and Entrepreneurship program and the School of Art. DTE is an interdisciplinary program that brings together faculty from the disciplines of art, physics, and business to provide a comprehensive education for undergraduate students seeking to develop products and/or services for industry, society, and the planet.
The successful candidate will teach six courses annually ranging from theory to practice. Topics include but are not limited to: ideation, methodology, prototyping, fabrication, and human factors. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to inspire students conceptually, aesthetically, and technically.
The Ames School of Art, one of IWU’s four professional schools, offers the BFA, BA, and minors in Graphic Design, Studio Art, and Art History. The School of Art boasts two galleries, Macintosh computer lab, wood shop, foundry, welding, laser cutters and 3D printing. Additionally, IWU’s state-of-the-art IDEA center, provides the space and technology for students to invent, prototype, and launch their ideas into reality.

Master’s degree or higher in Product Design, Industrial Design, or related field
Demonstrable skills in oral and written communications
Ability to foster an active and engaged learning environment
Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college-level
Evidence of creative/scholarly activity
Experience in curriculum development and implementation
Teach six courses annually as assigned by the Director and consistent with expertise
Hold weekly office hours
Attend School of Art faculty meetings and DTE team meetings
Actively contribute to growing the DTE program
