My senior seminar project at Washington University in St. Louis is a set of five thin books that present, in a lesson-style format, the topic of American free speech. Each book treats a special issue (history, book banning, public protest and social media) by presenting a case study—'The Satanic Verses,' offensive lyrics, the Westboro Baptist Church, and Kony 2012. Each case incorporates curated news articles, timelines, photographs, memoirs, video stills and other primary source material. The covers of each book are formed with three-dimensional white-on-white typography, captured in careful collaboration with student photographers. Heavy gatefold covers wrap around French-fold book blocks, perfect bound by hand. The back half of each book presents several layers (timeline, text, pull quotes and callouts) of supporting and informational text exploring the larger topic. These sections are printed on a softwhite paper for differentiation.
