Traineau
Fall 2010
The objective of this space was to design a restaurant in an old train duct in Paris, France. By using the context of the site such as trains, movement and travel I used the concept of movement. To show movement, aluminum bands were bent to follow the shape of the arch of the space and then form a basket-like structure around the mezzanine. The metal bands also come down and form the tables for the booths. This creates a representation of movement in the space. The aluminum bands also continue onto the floor where they turn into a gray limestone between tiles of a beige limestone. A clear dumbwaiter is also used to reinforce the idea of movement. A datum is created by using the window frames as a guide to put the mezzanine. The inspiration for the metal arches comes from the architecture of French train stations during the Art Nouveau period. Booths and banquet seating are used so more tables can be added if needed.
