Emory Village (Atlanta, GA)- Before - A dilapidated previous dry cleaners adjacent to Emory University before its transformation into a new Chipotle. *Done under r e d architecture + planning
Emory Village - After - Previous facade stripped off made way for a new branded Chipotle facade. This facade created a new interior/exterior patio to make use of the Atlanta Georgia climate on a street that did not have any patio seating, creating a unique dining experience for the area. This involved a complicated new structural floor in order to deal with the interior/exterior concept, and the new floor loading of the kitchen equipment. This project had multiple filings in front of the local development and historical board due to the nature of the extreme rehabilitation, and switching the use-group of the space. *Done under r e d architecture + planning
Emory Village - After - Work with what you got! I fought to keep and preserve the existing plaster wall along the queue line creating a unique design element special to the space and site. *Done under r e d architecture + planning
Emory Village - After - Showcasing the beautiful structure of the existing space. Storefront was kept down to 12'-6" in an effort to avoid a curtainwall system saving the client thousands of dollars in site development. *Done under r e d architecture + planning

Barracks Row (Washington DC) - This project entailed half a dozen different historical and community board hearings before filing being passed. I had to work with multiple board and community representatives in order to create a rat proof trash enclosure and rear yard beautification project, as this abutted a residential street; they were trying to get all restaurants removed from Barracks Row. The sound proofing measures for HVAC units and vermin mediation I developed were then used by the board for all future commercial tenants along Barracks Row. A personal triumph in community relations for a client. *Done under r e d architecture + planning
Barracks Row - Existing dollar store to Chipotle with basement bathrooms, and second floor tenants. Said to be an impossible project to be passed with the local community. So glad we proved them wrong! The space was small, but had an unbelievable through-put for online orders given the area and close proximity to the subway entrance. *Done under r e d architecture + planning
Barracks Row - I tried to showcase as much of the existing building as possible. Who doesn't want some exposed brick in their Chipotle? *Done under r e d architecture + planning
Chester VA - Before - An old Waffle House was the beginning for a challenging new project that did not meet square footage requirements, required extensive planning and development approvals. *Done under r e d architecture + planning
Chester - After - A certain percentage of the existing footprint and glazing had to remain, so this was the result of an extensive planning and zoning back and forth. However through extensive reviews and partnership with the city I found almost $80,000 in zoning improvement grants for the client that they received post open. This garnered me quite a few Burrito Bucks from the Real Estate department! *Done under r e d architecture + planning
Chester - New EIFS cap allowed for creative ways to light the exterior. *Done under r e d architecture + planning
South Lamar (Austin TX) - Before - Austin Texas has the motto "Keep Austin Wierd", and this project was no exception. Even though it was a falling down previous 7-11 turned golf shop the city was adamant we retained the existing "character" of the building. *Done under r e d architecture + planning
South Lamar - After - This project was caught in the middle of a new watershed zoning ordinance. I went through so many permit revisions that they eventually asked me to start over given the amount of repeated permit comments and revisions. In the end we created a fantastic new Chipotle for the local area. *Done under r e d architecture + planning
South Lamar - Before
South Lamar - After - While the majority of the building was preserved in appearance the main entry was greatly redesigned. We stripped off the old 7-11 roof element and replaced it with a sky framing overhang; this acted as both a fantastic billboard from the street, and a magnificent surprise upon entry. *Done under r e d architecture + planning
South Lamar - With structural know how and a big design idea we created this unique entry experience. Thank you structural engineer. *Done under r e d architecture + planning

South Lamar - Due to low head heights of the protected ceiling structure all ductwork was run externally and carefully dropped in-between joists. The result allowed us to showcase the wood ceiling bringing warmth to an unexpected space. *Done under r e d architecture + planning

Downtown Louisville Chipotle - With glazing on two of the four walls we had to do something creative to give ourselves some private back of house space. For this location I developed this two tone perforated pattern to resemble the backlit plywood walls used as part of the prototype. This image shows a humorous modification we made in order to give this door a peephole per the Building Inspector at final approvals. *done under r e d architecture + planning

Downtown Louisville Chipotle - This one had great bones; all we needed to do here was expose them and keep them free of extraneous ornamentation. *Done under r e d architecture + planning

Ghent (Norfolk, VA) - Before - We were charged with updating this old Mexican restaurant and converting it into a sleek refined Chipotle. Challenges included ceiling heights that didn't meet current codes, building out an unconditioned rear shed into a working kitchen. The best part was when the front facade fell off during landlord demolition work....it was a doozy!
Ghent - After - The end result was a grey battleship of a Chipotle. Challenges included five different permitting authorities for interior and exterior dining, and a late scope add to fit our the neighboring tenant space for the landlord. *Done under r e d architecture + planning
Austin Landing - I did initial building layout and schematic design as the Studio Manager. The local zoning codes challenged us to use two different brick types in a decorative capacity in order to create architectural differentiation from the surrounding buildings; as always it was a delicate dance between zoning codes and branding strategies. Tiffany Clapper took over as Project Manager to finalize design development, detailing, and construction documents. *Done under r e d architecture + planning

New Cube - Chipotle prototype. I worked on the schematic design concepts for this brand new prototype for Chipotle. They wanted to do their first ever rain screen system with cemclad paneling. I developed this system from a series of interviews, design research and development. This project was run by Tiffany Clapper who was one of my direct reports. *Done under r e d architecture + planning

New Cube - Exterior dining was very important to Chipotle. This prototype offered a protected patio experience showcasing the structural elements, and allowed for exterior seating at every location. *Done under r e d architecture + planning

Hershey PA - I did the concept design, massing and preliminary detailing of the exterior with the client and project manager Josh Welfle before passing on to Josh for Construction Documents. This project presented a multitude of design challenges since the Hershey Zoning Ordinances required elements of limestone, quoins, carrying roof lines and other classical architect motifs not general part of the minimalist Chipotle language. *Done under r e d architecture + planning

FUSIAN (OSU University Columbus, OH) - A sushi fast casual concept was brought to us for their first Columbus location. We were challenged to work within their brand identity, but being a relatively new brand of only a few stores were challenged to build upon that in our own way. *Done under r e d architecture + planning with Kyle Artar and Jason Dolan.

FUSIAN - In this store we created a new style of seating for FUSIAN; a one sided high seating area resembling that of a typical sushi restaurant where individuals could feel comfortable sitting alone, but also worked as standing areas. The owners told us that this became the most highly used seating area in the restaurant and they were adapting it into their brand identity. *Done under r e d architecture + planning with Kyle Artar and Jason Dolan.

Fast Casual

When I started at r e d architecture + planning I worked on the 8th Chipotle the firm had done. By the time I left four years later I was running the department of 10-12 designers and celebrating our 500th Chipotle project. It was an exciting and busy time. These are just a handful of the projects I worked on and/or managed during that time.
