Job Description

Careers that Change Lives
At Medtronic our design researchers lead experienced teams and clinicians through the research process to develop thoughtful and inspiring insights. These insights inspire our designers, scientists and engineers to create solutions that deliver positive impacts to the clinicians and patients we are centered around.

You will be a member of the new Pre-Concept team that supports the design and development of innovative, new products within the Respiratory Interventions (RI) business. You make the biggest impact by bringing to life the voice of the people we’re designing for and connecting the internal design team to the human experience of both the clinicians and the patients they serve. We count on you to strengthen our procedural fluency (i.e. through interviews and ethnographic studies in various clinical settings) and to push the edges of how we search for insights and inspiration for both internal and external stakeholders.

Respiratory Intervention’s purpose is to improve the management of patients with acute respiratory failure. We will do this by providing respiratory interventions that improve outcomes and reduce the cost of procedural complications. The newly formed Technology Development/Pre-Concept team will focus on creating category redefining products and services for eliminating difficult intubations.

Impact patient outcomes. Come for a job, stay for a career.

A Day in the Life
As an RI Design Researcher, you will travel to various locations in the US and the rest of the world to work with experts, clinicians and patients to explore and understand the complexities of the clinical procedure, identify both the direct and indirect stakeholders of the respective procedure and how these stakeholders interact with medical devices and/or each other. You will lead teams through bespoke research plans. While you may be accountable for the plan and associated logistics, every member of the team will contribute and collectively produce research findings. These findings will inform and inspire strategic decisions and design solutions to enable clinicians to conduct procedures efficiently, minimizing complications and improve patient’s safety and overall outcome.

Collaborating with various cross-functional teams you will be an advocate for the user and patient throughout the full development process.

You will help to identify intended users, their work environments and unmet needs, as well as potential use-related hazards; determine product use cases and identify critical user tasks. With a focus on the user experience, you will follow a user centric iterative design process to arrive at designs that meet the clinical needs of the user, while also capturing their imagination through aspirational, engaging functionality. This will be done in close collaboration with the full development team to strike the right balance of the product’s Cost, Technical Feasibility, Reliability and Manufacturability. The Research Designer is part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for brainstorming concepts, sketching, prototyping mockups, participating in design critiques, refining design directions and finalizing design details.

Responsibilities Include:
• Lead generative design research with contextual enquiries, ethnographic research and create research related design deliverables (experience maps, user profiles/personas, workflows, prototypes, etc.)
• Be responsible for structuring human-centered research programs from a bespoke blend of methods appropriate to each clinical setting
• Conducting research in clinical environments to identify spoken and unspoken user needs
• Turn insights into design opportunities and collaborate with teammates to create innovative products, interactions, experiences and potentially, services
• Create inspiring ways to translate complex clinical inputs into simple, understandable contextual stories that help validate product propositions
• Collaborate with upstream marketing to rationalize the identified needs as a commercial/product opportunity
• Input to Human Factors to design and facilitate formative usability evaluations to ensure user interaction requirements are met, and contribute to the verification of medical devices
• Must have an affinity for consistency, an appreciation of the responsibilities of the clinician and an empathy for the patient, while maintaining the RI standards of quality.

• Bachelor’s or post grade degree in a research and/or design related discipline, such as User Research, Product Design, Product Design Engineering, Creative/Design Thinking or other degree relevant to clinical research
• 2+ years agency or in-house research experience

Must Have Experience:
• An extensive track record of qualitative and quantitative research experience culminating in a sound ability to scope a research process, lead fieldwork, conduct interviews and perform desk research to discover insights first-hand. Since our projects require a global perspective, experience running research across more than one market is a plus.
• You have experience with qualitative research - you have written discussion guides, conducted expert interviews, and have some experience with using ethnographic research methods.
• Ability to synthesize research findings to uncover and articulate insights that will inform and inspire design. Design Researchers must be able to lead the team through the analysis and synthesis processes – distilling down to focus on the most important insights, linking them together in frameworks or principles for design.
• Ability to shape and contribute to strategic, systems thinking based upon insights gathered through research
• Exceptional communication and storytelling skills; fluency and confidence in inspiring teammates and clients with user-driven rationale
• High comfort level in working within a self-directed culture and navigating ambiguity
• Strong communication skills and ability to stay highly organized are critical
• Self-starter who takes initiative and drives to solutions across teams
• Multi-tasker who works efficiently under pressure, maintaining focus on the details
• Team player, understanding that the team’s success is directly linked to personal growth and career advancement
• Eager to learn and willingness to share
• New product development experience

Nice to Have:
• Previous experience in medical device development, particularly research experience in clinical environment.
• Business Acumen
• Interpersonal Savvy

NOTE: International candidates must hold a valid US working permit.
