Under direction of the Director of Industrial Design, the Lead designer, will demonstrate the use of development tools and understanding of all aspects of the product design process during development of the assigned projects. They will utilize core design skills, adhere to the timing and action calendar, execute production level information including 3D data, follow through with all steps for execution of the product from concept to post design finalization, increase the number of projects executed with the use of external resources, maximize vendor resources, assist in driving the category assigned from a design perspective, and work with cross functional team members during all aspects of execution. The Lead designer will lead and mentor other designers, including Staff and Associate designers and possibly Senior designers, and drive the assigned categories. Collaboration on strategies to obtain adoption will be done with design management. The designer at this level will expected to drive product execution and fully understand the process. Design management will help provide strategy and support as needed, but execution of design process should be able to be executed with little supervision.
The Lead ID for F&S will focus on designing
kayaks and overseeing execution in camp, hunt, and tackle product.
DESIGN: Design and Develop products defined by the project briefs within a FOB goal. In this execution use core design skills for research, concept generation, product validation, ergonomics, 3D modeling, materials and process, aesthetics development, color selection, tech pack along with supportive collateral information for product execution, and strategic design with the use of DSG available metrics. Use various tools available during this process. (i.e. first insight, qualitative/quantitative research, trend analysis, and review of available metrics.)
DRIVE INNVOATION: Push beyond the core product ask and Introduce innovation within various categories. These projects will fall within and outside the T&A calendar and utilize the core design skills sets to execute. Use available resources and tools available to define product opportunities. Work with design management and product manager to justify the business case and size of the opportunity. Focus is on trend, research, category knowledge, and Concept ideation. Mentor and guide reporting designers to do the same.
DRIVE STRATEGY: Drive strategic direction for the category in conjunction with various levels of design management and Product Management team members. Focus will be within 1-2 categories depending on the size of the category. Work with cross functional teams to ensure designs are accurate and complete as defined by the project brief. Changes defined during the development process are updated and communicated on all appropriate channels. Drive and own the strategic development of the opportunities of the assigned category. Validate that the design team is being challenged in the appropriate channels.
WORK WITH EXTERNAL RESOURCES: Work with internal, external, and foreign resources to obtain the required deliverables of the timing and action calendar. If required communicate with the HKO office and directly to manufacturing vendors to maintain design and functional intent. Work with external resources for execution of design and prototype resources to expand the amount of work being executed.
MANAGE and MENTOR: Manage and mentor reporting designers throughout the various aspects of the process as mentioned above. Oversee the comprehensive completion of projects and track deliverables associates to the design and development process.
• Bachelor's Degree- Industrial Design
• 7-10 Years of Experience- Design experience working for an OEM or Consultancy. Previous experience with design management preferred.
