Job Description
The Humanities, Social Science, and Communication (HSC) Department at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) is seeking an Assistant Professor in the field of User Experience (UX) with a specialization in emerging technology.  The new faculty member would teach a variety of courses for the degree, including but not limited to design for Extended Reality (XR) and immersive media. The faculty member will contribute to the maturation of the undergraduate UX program strategy and curriculum, connect program graduates to external industry partnerships, and participate in student recruitment efforts. The new faculty member will join a collegial, cohesive, and productive team of UX educators committed to high quality teaching, developing a hands-on and innovative curriculum, and expanding the role of inclusive design in academic, workforce, and professional settings.   
A Master’s degree in User Experience, Human-Centered Design, Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction, Multimedia or Interactive Design, or another related field is required, Ph.D. is preferred. The position will be available beginning in fall of 2023. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience based on annual 9-month contract. 
 
Required Qualifications, Competencies, Knowledge, and Skills:? 
  • Experience in any of the following: Design for AI, XR, and/or voice design. 
  • Experience can include academic coursework and studio projects involving immersive technologies.  
  • Relevant experience teaching college students.   
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and tools:? 
  • Experience in designing 2D and 3D content (e.g., Unity, any Adobe VR, AR, or 3D sculpting tool, prototyping (e.g., Figma Adobe XD), and working in collaborative visual platforms (e.g., FigmaJam, Mural, etc.). 
  • Understanding of the digital landscapes (e.g., Metaverse).  
  • Familiarity with front-end development technologies and/or AI-driven design.  
  • Experience teaching online and hybrid courses and/or managing hybrid workplaces.  
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build successful relationships with students and faculty from other departments. 
 
The HSC Department has offices in MSOE’s Grohmann Museum, home of the Man at Work collection of industrial art. The User Experience Program is located in the Dwight and Dian Diercks Computational Science Hall with modern classrooms, innovative laboratories, and study spaces dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI), deep learning, cyber security, robotics, cloud computing and other next-generation technologies. The UX program’s Gene Carter Usability Lab provides collaborative space for faculty and students to research and develop engaging interactive experiences. 
 
An institution that also offers degrees in engineering, user experience, and business, nursing, MSOE is located on the beautiful east side of downtown Milwaukee, just blocks from Lake Michigan and within easy walking distance of the city’s highly acclaimed fine arts and entertainment venues. With approximately 2500 full-time students, our campus maintains an intimate, small-town atmosphere.
