The requirements of a product depend on who it is being made for, how it will be used, if it can be manufactured, and hopefully create a profit. Once you define your objectives it is important to see what else it similar to what you want to create and how you can make yours different.
Once you know what you are making, it must fit in, not only the package, but the place where it will be sold comfortably. One must also find as many ways to keep costs to a minimum and make sure that all of the parts create a whole.
Engineering is a process which usually requires revisions after the product is mocked up to make sure that you are going to where you want to wind up.
If a consumer must assemble your item, you better make sure it is easy as possible for them to do so or you've lost your customer. Packaging is just as important to a consumer to make sure it's simple, attractive, and gets the point across of what item you are selling to make sure they want it!
