Movie 101 Workshop was conducted at Zhangyuan Elementary School in Taitung, Taiwan. The goal was to create an enriching English learning opportunity. for students of Zhangyuan Elementary, through the goal of producing a short movie. The students will go through the phases of creating their own plot, characters, scenario and lyrics. Each student plays a character represented by the toy of his/her choice. Volunteers will guide them along the way, but all of the shooting and planning were executed by students. The lyrics were translated to English by volunteers and students learned to recite their lines in English. The delivery was a movie premiere event for all of the teams, including pop corns and soda.
Day 01 is about getting the plot down. Students were introduced to different genres of movies to stimulate their ideas. Students then worked as a team to decide on the genre and began to form stories. They then choose their characters from a collection of toys of which they will be playing in the movie. Simple worksheets were used as a way for them to consolidate their thoughts.
Day 02 starts with completing the story and there certainly were much disputes between team members. Each group had a director role assigned to a member and volunteers mentor group discussions to help them understand the importance of being a team member. Some teams started to get into details such as scene transitions, others move on to prop making using recycled and found objects.
Day 03, the lines that each character has to recite during the play were translated by volunteers and students learned to speak their lines. Students also started to film to test the water, while volunteers stimulate their thoughts on details and missing parts of the story, as well as the building of physical props and sets.
Day 04 is the real deal, when students will have to nail their roles in the play. This was the last day of filming, and all the teams were on the mission to complete all of the planned shots. During this day, we saw students taking more roles then they initially assumed when team work was not going well. Members start to place higher expectation for the quality of the work, and became very passionate about every detail from the movements of the characters to the emotional expression of each actor's performance.
After shooting all of the raw footage, volunteers spent the night to put them together as a complete short movie. All teams gather on the last day to watch their own movie premiere. The students were able to remember their English lines after days of applying them during the shooting, and were even able to apply what they have learned in other context.
