Causeway
Interactive Mechanical Sculpture
by Michael Oechsle & Nik Greig 2013

In nature, basalt columns are caused by instabilities in the Earth’s crust, causing magma to spew up from beneath the surface and spill out as lava. As the lava cools and settles, hexagonal columns are formed, creating stunning rock formations.

Part social furniture, part kinetic sculpture, Causeway takes this idea of instability as inspiration for creating unexpected interactions between the public in an urban setting. Each monolithic concrete block is linked to another, and when sat or jumped on creates a reaction elsewhere on the piece. Causeway is designed to disrupt notions of solitude and personal space, provoking shared experiences and play.

Causeway has been engineered as an original public art-work, please contact if interested in commission.
