BIG PROBLEM. - The mission charged to our interdisciplinary team by Proctor & Gamble and IDSA was to create a product to aid in the global water crisis - to create a sustainable water purification system for emerging nations.
A simple solution. The waterBOX. An intuitive, durable, user-friendly & comprehensive water purification cartridge. Dirty water goes in one end; purified water comes out the other. Informational labels and icons explain how to use, maintain and recharge the purification cartridges.
A logical liner construction allows the user to gain access to the inner workings of the cartridge that is providing them purified water. This also allows the user to supply their own locally available filtration medium. Various filtration methods have been colour coded and can be used together to create a customized system for the exact needs of the user. In addition a testing cartridge was created to assure that the water being purified is up to EU water quality standards.
This was our vision. But the reality is that Proctor & Gamble already makes this: the PUR sachet. One sachet is capable of purifying 10L of water and costs only 3.5 cents; which is too much for those in need to afford.
So we had a revelation and proposed a more controversial solution to P&G. We proposed that the product wasn't a product at all but instead the solution was knowledge and information which we compiled into the WATERbook. This solution to the problem does not come from outside sources but is instead intended to empower the user to assess and diagnose the problem and create their own solution with the aid of the information found in the WATERbook.
Information about communications approaches to communities in need, water sources, storage, transport, purification and materials. The WATERbook is intended to be used by individuals, communities and organizations as a tool to assess water quality problems within a given area. But. The distribution of the WATERbook poses another issue, Hence the creation of waterbook.org It's a start.
