The above picture illustrates the procedure of CFD analysis external flow of van. The box used is to set the parameters inorder to carry out the flow simulation.
Setting the surface parameters of the road and ready to begin the run of the simulation.
Assigning surface goals to the van model. Later on the same procedure will occur but for the van + trailer.
Applying Mesh type inorder to run the simulation
External flow simulation in progress
Flow simulation of the van completed + Trajectory
After completing the CFD analysis external flow of van, the next task is to rin the same simulation of van + trailer.
Flow simulation completed for the van + trailer and flow trajectory established.
Final task is run the flow simulation of the van + modified trailer to study and compare the aerodynamic forces acting on the van.
Modelling the behaviour of fluids weather internal or external is an important aspect as it allows us to predict the behaviour of the fluids and test the effect of solid bodies prior to experimentation and implementation. The goal of this project was to model a Ford TRANSIT panel van and run an external flow by itself and by towing a box trailer at 70mp/h. Investigate the overall aerodynamic forces (lift, drag) acting on the van and van with trailer combination and suggest improvements on the trailer aerodynamics and assess the magnitude of such improvements.
