The Lost Letter

This was a set and costume design for a production of the Romanian classic. Produced by Peter Fekete, General Director of the Békéscsaba Jokai Szinhaz (Bekescsaba Jokai Theatre), the design is based around a concrete library (representing a possible bunker, possible church) in one instant, and in another instant, a transparent walled room emphasising the effects of the communist state "eavesdropping" on political factions, a typical occurence in Ceausescu's Romania.

The movement of the abstract window creates tension within the space and the imagery of various Last Suppers, mirrors what is played out in the room below.

The breakdown of the faction and the inevitable intrusion of the state is represented at the end when the walls crack and split letting in all outside of this concrete library.

The biggest influnce on this design came from the elegant and poignant work of British Sculptor, Rachel Whiteread.
