CARE stands for "Cherished Albums Restoration Effort", offering FREE digital restoration services for hurricane-damaged photos. Hundreds of Photoshop wizards from 31 countries have already helped repair over 1,000 priceless mementos. (The image posted above is one of CARE's earliest, signature restorations belonging to a woman whose family lost its home and most of its possessions. A few days after registering her sole 5 surviving photos, her papa passed away.)

Though not a major feat of design, careforsandy.org is clean, user-friendly, fast-loading and looks great on mobile devices. I copy weed monthly to ensure that info-dense portions are clear and up-to-date. There are 39-frames, not including individually highlighted restorations.

The tighter one zooms, the more prolific the grime. Most photos are scanned at 600dpi, and volunteers are encouraged to zoom in 200% to clear images of all micro-imperfections so that families can enlarge prints for mantlepiece framing. Quality over quantity. Keeping standards high has resulted in improved skills + enthusiastic return volunteers...

85% of all images receive personalized, cyber coaching from yours truly. (Many have indicated they've learned more volunteering for CARE than in college Photoshop classes!) It's especially important to take care with faces, to ensure that portraits look like "that" person, not just anyone.

This photo was used to demonstrate "how to remove tiny white dots that look as if someone has exploded opaque soda" (which cannot be seen at this preview size) without blurring, within CARE's private volunteer forum. Tips, tricks and discussions are posted weekly to provide encouragement and technical support.
