Work History

Paul S. Flower 365 Pearl St. South Haven, MI 49090 269-720-1429 paulflower34@gmail.com What I’ve been doing lately. Freelance Writer, Creative Consultant Paul Flower, Writer May 2009 to present Highlights: Creating concepts and copy for a growing and pretty diverse group of clients and projects, both B-to-B and consumer. We’re talking research-heavy collateral and new-product positioning ads for office furniture companies; packaging, print and interactive for a global direct marketing leader’s product re-launch; themelines for a tech company’s repositioning. All this. And so much, much more. Creative Director/Sr. Writer STAP, Inc., Kalamazoo, MI November 2001 to May 2009 Highlights: As lead creative and sole writer, developed and maintained the brand voice for NAVTEQ, international tech leader based in Chicago. Helped sustain a seven-year-plus relationship, leading creative direction, participating in all key branding/strategic discussions, writing all materials and concepts (B-to-B and consumer; traditional media and new media) and producing and directing video and broadcast/podcast work. Creative Director The Image Group, Holland, MI January 2001 to November 2001 Highlights: Creative Director for growing print, broadcast and interactive agency. Mentored staff of around six (it fluctuated) art directors and writers. Hired production manager and led implementation of job trafficking system. Also handled concept and copy work on education, automotive and other regional B-to-B and consumer accounts. Left to return to previous employer-agency (when former client asked us to work for her at NAVTEQ). What I did before that. Sr. Writer/Associate Creative Director/Creative Director STAP, Inc., Kalamazoo, MI September 1996 to January 2001 Copy Director Johnson & Dean, Grand Rapids, MI November 1990 to September 1996 What I did before that. Copywriter/Sr. Writer Inwords, Grand Rapids, MI Johnson & Dean, Grand Rapids, MI (Yes, they also hired me twice.) O & O Communications, Grand Rapids, MI Spartan Stores, Grand Rapids, MI What I do well. Develop funny, refreshing, serious, compelling, warm, dead-on, informative, motivational, inspiring, metal-moving, image-molding copy and concepts for interactive, web, newspaper, radio, television, outdoor, direct mail, collateral, video--consumer and B-to-B. Understand enough about everything to sell it to anybody. Supervise creatives, nurturing talent, nursing egos, setting high standards, coordinating job scheduling, and being the usually reasonable, reliable go-between with other departments. Manage vendor relationships. Supervise crews and manage clients while directing talent for television, video, and broadcast/podcast production Knock clients flat out in presentations. What I’ve done. Consumer: Tech, retail, healthcare, education, banking, automotive, sports, real estate, insurance. B-to-B: Tech, furniture, direct marketing, food wholesaling, baby products, foodservice, plastic-injection molding, plus manufacturers of paper, weld wire, automotive parts, packaging products, pharmaceuticals, toilet seat covers, paper towels, and more. Brands: NAVTEQ (and its customers, including Garmin, Hewlett-Packard, Best Buy, Lincoln), Meijer, Kellogg, Gerber, Amway/Alticor, NBD, and others. What I’ve won. Numerous Advertising Federation ADDY Awards. Accolades from clients and peers. The love of a good woman. Undying affection of my yellow lab. Where I went to school. Central Michigan University: Bachelor of Applied Arts; May 1980. Who I am (a snapshot). Coach, South Haven high school cross country and track. Member of Performance Plus Quick Lube Preferred Customer Club. Married since forever to my college sweetheart. Four pretty-much-grown children. I like writing, running and biking, movies, books, gardening, baseball and the other sports, politics, home-improvement work, picture-taking, going to my church, social activism, making people laugh, drinking coffee, drinking the occasional adult beverage, and being occasionally adult. I once sang “Michael Row Your Boat Ashore” to bankers and still don’t know why they didn’t buy the TV spot. I killed.
