To kern a word is to adjust the spacing between the characters in order to achieve a visually harmonious result and optimal legibility. Our firm is named after this typesetting term because it speaks to the attention we give to the details and to the importance of getting them just right. With this approach, the beauty and clarity of the whole is almost unavoidable, or so we believe.
Nice Kern is a full-service communications design firm. Our recent experience includes branding, editorial, environmental graphic design and digital. We’ve analyzed site plans to determine a better navigation system, we’ve decluttered an editorial message for greater impact and we’ve listened to our client’s mission, distilling it to a beautiful mark. Responding to our client’s needs with appropriate solutions that reflect and enhance their message is our number one goal. We design from the inside out—starting with the client’s core mission, collaborating to strengthen it and then allowing the visuals to evolve into a tailored design solution, whether that be for a family of signs, a publication or a smart phone app.

2013 - 2014 Reported to the Editor-in-Chief. Partnered with the Director of Photography in leading the vision for the print magazine. Briefed stylists, art directed food shoots and designed covers and features.
2012 - 2013 Reported to the Creative Director. Selected to lead the visual branding for: the website, digital media, print magazine, tablet editions and books. Managed staff and freelance designers in the design of: monthly magazine (print and tablet), books and website, consistently meeting deadlines. Directed and managed a successful redesign of the print magazine. Collaborated with F&W’s marketing team as needed in execution of marketing materials for print and digital.

Designed identities, digital assets and experiences for the website. Collaborated with developers and project managers in building products. Oversaw the launch of the tablet edition. Directed the design, photo and production teams in executing the bi-monthly issues. Collaborated with the Editor-in-Chief and her team in establishing the POV for the themed issues. Designed covers and features for the tablet editions.
