..::PROFILE::..
I am an enthusiastic, motivated, passionate, and focused young designer with growing experience in the design of consumer electronics and consumer products. I strive to bring creative thought, lateral insight, keen observation, and a strong aesthetic and formal sensitivity to all my work.
I am extremely passionate about design, and in particular its strategic role within a business. I believe that by understanding the context, environment, and use of products with respect to the user we can design products and services that are more relevant, more enjoyable to use, more enriching to own, and ultimately more desirable and successful in the marketplace. I believe the most interesting innovations in design over the next 15 years will be formed at the intersection of the real and the virtual – product and software integrated seamlessly into a compete product experience.

Jan 2005 - Mar 2007: Navman New Zealand, Christchurch, NZ Industrial Designer
Navman is a consumer electronics company specialising in designing, manufacturing, and selling high quality in-car navigation products and marine electronics for the European, North American, and Australasian markets. The company is currently the number two brand for in-car navigation in the European market with a reputation for quality and innovation.
In my role as Industrial Designer, I worked within a small team focused primarily on designing products for the consumer focused in-car navigation business. I was heavily involved in many aspects of designing and developing new products, often working with other teams in offices in the United Kingdom, Asia, and the United States. The key aspects of my role were:
- Researching, defining and developing a Design Strategy and Design Identity for the Navman brand.
- Undertaking trend and market research to identify opportunities for future products
- Working with product management and marketing teams to define new product design directions and feature sets.
- Conceptualisation and design development of new and future products including sketch concept generation, illustrator renderings, model making, and production surface modelling.
- Creating documentation to communicate design intent effectively to manufacturers based in different countries and time zones.
- Working with contractors, and ODM engineering teams to maintain design integrity in the final engineered solutions for new products.
- Designing packaging and out of box experiences for new products.
- Working within a cross functional GUI design team to design and develop new touch screen and hard button user interfaces
Jul 2004 - Mar 2007: E-Blah-Blah Ltd, Christchurch, NZ Freelance Consultant
E Blah Blah is an innovative Internet cafe, tourist information centre, and technology rental and advice hub. Currently the largest net café in Christchurch, the company has plans to franchise around the country.
I was responsible for directing interior architects, graphic designers and management on building a recognisable brand and brand experience, and in ensuring the identity is maintained as the business grows and expands into new areas and adds additional services. I was also involved in developing new services and concepts for expanding the business and maximising returns on existing investment by running small creative workshops for the management.
Dec 2003 - Jan 2005: Applied Design Development Ltd, Christchurch, NZ Industrial Designer
Applied Design Development is a small consultancy offering companies a complete design solution encompassing three areas of design: product design, graphic design, and web design.
Due to the nature of the consultancy, I was expected to learn quickly and work with a high degree of autonomy in a high-pressure and fast passed environment. Projects ranged in size from low cost, very high volume products from the FMCG market, to low volume, high cost equipment for the medical industry. I often worked alongside clients during design process by holding workshops and brainstorming sessions. Clients include Syft, Skope Industries, Navman and Nestle.
Nov 2002 - Feb 2003: Design Mobel Ltd, Tauranaga, NZ Industrial Design Intern
Design Mobel designs and manufacturers high-end bedroom furniture for the Australasian market using sustainably harvested native timbers.
I earned the internship after presenting a sponsored university project to members of the Design Mobel design and marketing team. My internship focused on the design of a range of bedroom furniture targeted at the growing 18-35 year old, mid to high end market segment, an area where Design Mobel has had very little product or brand awareness. I also participated in focus group and market research sessions with the sales and marketing team leading to design facelifts to existing product ranges.
..::INTERESTS AND HOBBIES::..
I’m a keen player of team sports, particularly rugby union and touch, and also enjoy snowboarding, golf, mountain biking, studying architecture and design history and theory, travelling, music, and life. I also try to keep physically and mentally fit by running and exercising regularly at the gym.
