Design Concept Statement:
The design of this home will be warm, open and bright, and very connected to the outdoors with the surrounding nature driving the material selections. It will maximize built-ins and millwork. The program functions will be arranged so that the first floor acts as public space, and the second floor is private space. The home will also allow the Turner family to age in place.

Sustainability Statement:
The design will focus on water efficiency through the use of high efficiency fixtures and shared plumbing walls throughout the home.

Client Profile:
The Turner family is a retired couple in their 50’s. They bought a home in Jackson Meadow conservation community in Marine on St. Croix, MN. They enjoy being active, especially hiking and cross country skiing.

Exterior Designed by David Salmela
The driving factors in the design of the first floor include aging in place, the 12 exterior doors, and the need for a staircase. The main doors lead into the kitchen/dining area, and an open corridor allows easy circulation throughout the entire level with the kitchen and living areas open to each other. The bedroom can act as a guest bedroom and later be converted to the master bedroom. Extra storage is provided in the bedroom by built-in shelving in the wall between the bedroom and bathroom. Also, a storage closet is provided underneath the stairway.
The second level provides private spaces for the client. At the top of the stairs, there is the entry to the art studio for Mrs. Turner to the right, and a seating area and entrance to the master bedroom on the left. The art studio and bedroom each have separate full bathrooms. The full bathroom for the art studio allows the client a space to clean up without tracking any materials out of the art studio. In the bedroom, a walk-in closet provides built-in hanging, shelving and drawers with extra storage in a dresser in the bedroom. The island in the art studio provides extra workspace as well as storage.
