The San Francisco Chinese Chamber of Commerce wanted a photo frame for its annual Chinese New Year Festival. The client wanted something playful and universally understood, whether one's native language is English or Chinese.
The front of the bi-fold frame was completely hand-drawn in Illustrator. It depicts a scene of two lion dancers celebrating and welcoming the new year.

A lighter colored background was chosen for the inside so that it would be more energetic and lively. In addition, this shade of red is more commonly associated with good luck in the Chinese culture, than the maroon on the front.

Visitors at the festival had the opportunity to take a picture, which would then be printed on site and mounted on the inside of the document. To display the photo, the consumer can reverse the bi-fold, which would allow the frame to be freestanding.
The cherry blossoms in the background were hand-drawn in Illustrator. Texture was added to the background to make the composition slightly more visually stimulating.
