West Point Art Walk

The building culture of West Point, MS is one of use and re-use. People adapt and change the existing buildings to suit their needs, while still maintaining the language that has been established. The result is West Point’s visible cultural language. Maintaining the adaptive strategy and acknowledging their building culture reinforces their cultural identity as a place within a larger city.

The clustering of various building environments is a major organizational systems of the downtown area. This adaptive strategy can be witnessed as far back as 1885 and has influenced the location of many buildings. The clustered environments, interlocking nature of spaces, and adaptive re-use strategy drive this project and provide a way for individual architectural elements to contribute to the larger building culture of West Point.
