Lucky Bat Character Development in Collaboration with STX
For the UglyDolls movie, I collaborated with STX on the development of the character Lucky Bat. Because the film was highly anticipated in China, I proposed a design rooted in cultural symbolism: a red bat, shown hanging upside down whenever the story allowed. In Chinese culture, the phrase fu dao is a pun meaning both “bat hanging upside down” and “good fortune arriving.” Red itself is the color of luck, happiness, and prosperity. By weaving these elements into Lucky Bat’s design, we created a character that resonated with audiences while honoring cultural traditions.
