Word Play Lamp (Paper, mdf and final prototype) - This project was focused at creating a ambient lamp that users could interact with in a more playful way than a conventional lamp. Our group focused on the idea of leaving behind messages. The result was a lamp that one could place messages into and turn it on to draw in the next person, who can then create their own message. The lamp was modeled after the idea of a building with a alarm going off simulated with a spectrum changing LED bulb, that draws in others to see what is going on.
Word Play Letter Storage - Top area is large enough to hold to hold 70 of these acrylic blocks that are engraved with letters and numbers that can be easy arranged into the skeleton of the lamp to leave messages for yourself or others.
Word Play Detail View - The final design was cleaned up through multiple iteration with the help of in class crits. The vertical cuts at the top and bottom of the lamp were dismiss to focus on the letters space. The final design can be used wirelessly because a battery that can power the lamp for over 24 hours on a full charge. Final design of the profiles or the shade of the lamp are cut with a CNC router inside out to allow for the acrylic storage rack to be inserted which also creates added strength.
Electronics for Word Play - After experimenting with multiple light sources our group decided on a spectrum changing LED bulb. The idea was to draw people in towards the lamp to notice the message left behind. We utilized a sandblast acrylic tube to tuck alway the battery and light. Not being happy with the ambient light produced we found that adding a piece of mirrored-plexy above the battery doubled the ambient light which canceled out adding a more energy intensive light source and lead to a longer battery life.
1. Light for CNC Lab needed to be inspired by out side source = Seagram's building. 2. Paper Model for proportions. 3. Quick 3d model and vector drawing for CNC 4. First MDF prototype 5. Noticed opportunity for interaction by creating windows/letters. 6. Cleaning up form to bring attention to new design feature. 7. Edges mitered, slots created for storage of letter cubes/structure glued and taped till bonded 8. Finish work: Minor sanding, staining, electronics inserted and final product.
