I worked on the research and design of computer based examination software, which involved contextual enquiry and ethnography within a number of secondary schools, persona creation, requirement gathering and complex scenario creation. The second phase involved conceptual system interface mapping followed by detailed interface design of computer based examination software for students, invigilators as well as a set-up wizard for the technicians.
Stage 1 - The Ethnographic Research / Contextual Inquiry In the initial research phase, over a period of 2 weeks, we visited 8 secondary schools where we observed Computer based (CB) BMAT assessments using Connect software.
An overview of the data we gathered around the context
A example of some of the Technical issues we uncovered.
Our ethnographic research/contextual enquiry uncovered a wealth of interesting and useful findings about the people involved and their tasks, the context and environment in which CB exams are run, technical problems which occurred, usability issues which arose and general exam procedure and attitudes. Here is an example of some of the Usability issues we uncovered.
From the research we were able to create a number of detailed personas, which represented the three main users of the system, their roles and responsibilities as well as their behavioural and emotional goals. We also translated many of the findings into a both technical, UI and usability requirements for the next release of the Connect 6 software.

Shows high level interaction flow design for the Connect Installation and Setup Wizard. This flow solved many of the issues raised during the research and fulfilled both the technical and user requirements.
This specification (saved as a PDF) shows the detailed design for the Installation and Setup Wizard along with user scenarios.

Using the identified scenarios, the personas and the requirements spawned from the ethnographic research we designed a high level conceptual flow showing the stages necessary for the software to accommodate each stage of the set-up and running of the CB Assessments.

Cambridge Assessment - Computer Based Assessment UI designer

As a member of the ‘New Media’ team I worked as a User Experience Architect consultant for education assessment providers (ESOL, OCR and CIE). My particular area of focus was on new ‘Computer Based Assessment’ (CBA) systems being introduced into schools and centers globally.
