Junior: Sculpture Museum- Daylighting Project

Junior year, our studio focus was on daylighting practices and using a simulator to calculate interior daylighting levels off of simple 3D building models. We used the program Daysim that works with Sketchup to evaluate the suitability of the lighting levels. The main project for the semester was creating a Sculpture Museum to be built on the grounds of the NC Museum of Art.

My final design was a modification of the butterfly roof style, with a change in scale and section. Because of the nature of a sculpture building, most windows are situated high on the walls, except on the walls facing the central path. The building also sits on a planned site that makes concessions for drainage, parking, and contains a carefully designed sculpture garden.

The main focus of this project, however was the daylighting details. The final slides of this project detail the daylighting levels, of which my design consistently scored high ratings of daylight autonomy (and ideal situation).
