An Eye for Patterns

This exhibit was created for College of the Atlantic’s George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History as part of the course Curiosity and Wonder: Design and Interpretation in the Museum. This exhibit was informed by John Anderson's book Deep Things Out of Darkness. One particular chapter focused on the natural historian Alexander von Humboldt, the pioneer of geobiography, which he discovered after observing the patterns of life during numerous expeditions up mountains. The design of An Eye for Patterns provokes visitors to observe patterns in the arranged collections, echoing von Humboldt’s explorations. Visitors are challenged to think critically through a series of questions vertically located on the right side of the exhibit. The questions towards the ground are written for children, whereas the higher questions are curated for teens and adults.
