Building A City

Building in downtown Reykjavik where surrounding buildings are from early 1800´s. Program was an art gallery with a bookstore, coffee house, two showrooms and office for workers.

Who would use the building? Who would want to? What can you see and when can you see it? These were all important questions to me. Simplicity was key and respecting the buildings around was important to me. Second floor café opening to a double ceiling terrace, facing south onto a square filled with outdoor restaurants and bars was the heart of the building. Office on the top floor and bookstore on ground level where people could stop by, sit down, look out to the square and read. Poetic lighting in staircase.
