In honor of the controversial 2023 Met Gala theme, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, I created two looks inspired by Karl Lagerfeld's work. As Emily Kirkpatrick, writer and contributung editor at Vanity Fair says, "You’re welcome to enjoy this fashion and to appreciate the beauty. But just so you know, this guy probably hated you if you are not a white, size 00 model. He was not working for you. He was not making clothes for you.” (TIME)
I can appreciate the work of Karl Lagerfeld, and recognize the influence he has had on the craft of fashion. My goal with this collection is to create garments that will fit this theme while honoring my values as a person and an artist. I create clothes for the people that Lagerfeld believed should be left out of fashion. My work is typically centered around Black women. I want Black women to be able to see themselves in my work and know that we are valuable in the world of fashion despite what the industry tells us.
