The Vanilla Vortex - All vanilla, all the time ... I modified Sweet Revenge's Pure recipe to make these for an office wedding shower. I was pleased to hear that the brides-to-be assumed they were from a proper bakery as opposed to my humble kitchen. ** Image Credit: Lucy Wang **

The (Hakuna) Batata - The Batata is a sweet potato-based cupcake with coconut-vanilla buttercream garnished with pulverized ginger cookies. The backstory here is that I made a pair of sweet potato pies and ended up with some left over filling that needed a good home. I figured it might turn out pretty well if I parlayed it into cupcakes.
The Matilda - Dense and moist, this chocolate cupcake is made from a buttery chocolate stout beer batter that's been spiked with cayenne pepper. The Matilda is topped with a mountain of cinnamon-chocolate buttercream and garnished with toasted sliced almonds and a dash of paprika.
Chocolate Spearmint Argyle Cake - I woke up feeling pretty inspired at 7 a.m. once upon a time and decided to bake this triple layer cake. I went home at lunch to assemble and decorate it so that my co-workers could destroy it that afternoon. Yes, those are individual shots from the piping bag to create the diamond shapes. Yes, I maintain multiple piping bags for projects such as this. You just never know!
The Coconut Citrus - This miniature cupcake is a bite-sized, lemony delight. The medium-density cake is conservatively crowned with coconut buttercream and garnished with shredded coconut.

The Duplicate - Ahhhh, a taste of home! My hometown bakery, the Wyoming Pastry Shop, which is near Cincinnati, OH, makes a mean cake donut. My favorite incarnation was simply frosted with chocolate sprinkles. As a kid, I snarfed too many to count. I can't say these were quite as good, but for my first foray into donut frying, I think I did alright.
The Yellow Fellow - This old standby is a fluffy yellow cake that is lightly frosted with a milk chocolate ganache topped with rainbow sprinkles.
Chocolate Ginger Cake - Ginger marmalade between layers of milk chocolate cake.
