Strap, 2009. - Domesticating uncomfortable office chairs
Jackpot - While walking home one day, I noticed several used chairs in a dumpster. The New York state department of labor threw out dozens of them because of upholstery damage. Most had their original Emeco production tags, dating back from 1961 to 1984. The company’s virtually identical, aluminum version currently retails for $795.
Prototypes - After removing the upholstered seat and back, I screwed a longer wooden seat into the frame. I then bent a foam pad along the profile of the chair and over the back to be strapped to itself. I experimented with several solutions for this connection, and the horizontal band remained the most appealing.
Strap, 2009 - Emeco office chair frame, foam, wool upholstery, plywood, veneer, white/pearl automotive paint.
