Rusted Samurai Mask - This project showcased the erosion of a piece of technology that used to be at the forefront of personal protection. With the eventual progression of technology, objects that used to be cutting edge quickly become obsolete, and fade from memory. All that can remain of these technological wonders is the legend they leave behind for future generations.
Water Chamber - This chamber constantly poured salt water over the mask. This helped to erode the piece over time, creating an advanced form of material decomposition.
Early signs of rust
Waterfall - the dual texturing from the rust and the water creating shadow make for a nice effect.
Mask process shot - Face cast was used as a base to work out the size and contour of components.
First Stage Rust - It was interesting to see the surface patina change, and then gradually the texture of the surface became rougher as the salt ate its way through the steel.
Back of the mask - the red painted side lasted much longer against erosion
Rusted... - The mask after 7 days in salt water
