AV, Street View - Concept for a farm to occupy a full city-block in Red Hook, Brooklyn--an extension of an adjacent and existing community farm that is managed by the Added Value organization, a non-profit that supplies food to neighborhood restaurants, supports a twice-weekly farmer's market, and provides space and education for local youths.
AV, Soil - This project was conceived as a response to the existing soil conditions in Red Hook, where generations of waterfront industry have so polluted the soil that the existing farm cannot grow directly in the ground.
Typical planting grids by spacing and water requirements, looking at water collection and water table.
AV, Aerial - The planting area is put on the roof, for food security and separation from the contaminated soil/groundwater. Shallow water collection basins are put on the roof, and a variable spacing creates areas of different density for different plants.
Roof plan through collection basins, showing the relationship between structural grid lines and the depth of water across the surface. Section through collection basins, showing collected water weight pressurizing in situ bio-remediation treatment basins in the basement. Elevations.
AV, Biolab - Basement bioremediation tubs and education areas.
AV, Main Floor - Primary open space at the ground level for the farmer's market, showing collection basin roof.
